The ROI of Investing in Leadership Development
Investing in leadership development is key to long-term success and growth. Strong leaders boost productivity, inspire innovation, and engage their teams, creating a high-performing workplace culture. In today’s fast-changing business environment, leadership development is no longer optional — it’s a strategic imperative. Research consistently highlights the transformative impact of structured leadership development programs:
Enhanced Performance
Organizations with comprehensive leadership programs report performance gains of up to 25%.2
Recruiting Top Talent
Organizations that invest in human capital management and development are better positioned to attract high-potential talent.3
Increased Retention
Effective leadership programs significantly boost employee retention rates, reducing turnover by as much as 20%.4
SIGMA’s Leadership Development Process
At SIGMA, we take a strategic, three-phase approach to leadership development. Regardless of your industry or team size, these phases provide a clear roadmap for building a leadership development program that equips your organization for the challenges of tomorrow:
Before you can begin developing talent, you must first identify the talent you need. At SIGMA, we begin the process by taking an inventory of existing talent development processes, data, and tools. We then conduct stakeholder interviews to uncover the strategic goals and values that should be integrated in the leadership development process. Finally, we create a competency benchmark for what leadership looks like at the organization, based on competencies identified as critical to the team’s success.
After identifying the talent you need, the next step is to understand your organization’s current talent pool. This enables us to design a leadership development program that effectively bridges the gap between the talent you need and the talent you have. We facilitate this process by having leaders complete a Talent Review Survey, while potential future leaders complete the Leadership Skills Profile-Revised® (LSP-R®), an evidence-based leadership competency assessment. The results of this assessment form individual Talent Profiles for each candidate, which serve as a foundation for development efforts.
The third and final stage of the talent development process is dedicated to closing the gap between the talent you need and the talent you have. SIGMA’s consultants will:
-
- Compare Talent Profiles with Talent Benchmarks to pinpoint each candidate’s development needs.
- Create individualized talent development plans (IDPs) tailored to address those needs.
- Empower leaders to guide candidates’ development, offering ongoing feedback and coaching throughout the process.

“Erica is great, I was very comfortable in sharing my weaknesses with her, and she was very objective in describing my gaps and strengths. Erica was instrumental in helping me figure out how to improve my gaps and make a plan to become more effective and productive. We put a plan together that I will follow up with myself first of all, but with my boss as well. And it’s simple and focused enough that I’m confident I can follow it. (The exercises) helped me in accepting and owning my shortcomings an inspired me to set goals and make changes.”

Future-Proof Your Business
Strong leadership is one of the most critical drivers of long-term organizational success. Despite widespread recognition of its benefits, 72% of businesses admit their leadership pipeline is inadequate, and 45% of CEOs question whether their organization will survive the next decade without change.7 For organizations committed to long-term success, these numbers underscore the urgent need to invest in future-ready leadership.
Become a Competitive Employer
Beyond business viability, organizations that fail to invest in leadership development risk losing their top talent. A recent survey of more than 2,000 industry-based managers found that 92% believe having access to professional development is “important” or “very important.”8 Similarly, Execu|Search Group reports that 86% of professionals are willing to switch jobs if it means greater opportunities for professional growth — a clear signal that development is a top priority for today’s workforce.9 Without offering these opportunities, organizations risk losing high-potential employees to competitors who do. To attract, retain, and grow top talent, leadership development must be a strategic priority. With 63% of organizations already making it a key part of their talent strategy,10 those who don’t risk falling behind.
